10th September 2005
On September 10th 2005 Protestants (mainly women and children) in East Belfast set out to have a peaceful protest to support the Whiterock Parade which had been banned from walking up Workman Avenue in North Belfast.   Up to 100 Protestants turned out block the Albertbridge/Ravenhill Road jucntion.   The road had only been blocked for 10 minutes when we began to be verbally abused by Republicans from the Short Strand.   Very soon the mood turned violent when the Short Strand 'residents' began to pelt us with bricks, bottles, hammers and even lawnmower blades.   This attack lasted for around 20 minutes while PSNI officers stood back and watched.   Finally some order was restored when the army arrived but the damage was done an elderly man had been beaten by Republican thugs and had to lie on the ground because the ambulance could could not get through the crowd.
Later that night the it was the turn of the PSNI to attack the Protestant community.   They turned on women and children - including EBCWG members- and beat them, shot plastic bullets at them and verbally abused them.
